A Home With a Story

Built in 1901. Shaped by the land.

The Lantern began in 1901 as a one-room family home, with what are now the living room and Queen Suite forming the original house. It grew with the generations, expanding in the 1920s and again in the early 1960s.

Midway through renovation, the original pine walls were uncovered — and the plans changed. Believed to have been milled from timber taken from the surrounding land, these walls were part of the home's story long before The Lantern had a name. They had endured for more than a century, and preserving them became more important than perfecting them.

One of the earliest homes in the Bluewell area, The Lantern still carries the marks of its past. Not every edge is perfect. It isn't supposed to be. This is a home shaped by the land, the generations, and the soul of Appalachia.

The Lantern

The Sensory Edit

The details you notice. The ones you remember.

The Lantern was designed to be experienced with more than your eyes. From the feel of the bed to the scent of freshly made linens and the atmosphere that arrives after sunset, these details are intentionally layered into every stay.

Sleep

Crisp percale. Hotel-level comfort.

Our beds are layered with crisp cotton percale for a cool, breathable, softly substantial hotel-bed feel. Different pillow options are available to suit your sleep preference.

Scent

The signature.

Black Tea & Fig is The Lantern's signature whole-home fragrance — woven throughout the property and finished on every linen with Black Tea & Fig linen spray. A warm, sophisticated scent carried subtly throughout the stay.

The Scent Story

The scent guests keep asking us about.

The Lantern smells like Black Tea & Fig. It is our signature whole-home scent — the warm, distinctive fragrance that greets you when you walk through the door and lingers in your memory after you leave. But scent at The Lantern doesn't stop there. Throughout the stay, subtle layers build around that signature: bergamot, rose, jasmine, violet and pure white tea, grounded by amber, musk, woods and oakmoss. Honey and vanilla soften the edges, while touches of blackberry, brown sugar and cognac add warmth and depth. Together, they create The Lantern's Scent Story — a layered sensory experience built around one unmistakable signature: Black Tea & Fig.

After Dark

When the sun goes down, The Lantern comes alive.

Fireflies move through the trees, warm market lights glow outside, flickering lanterns cast a warm amber glow throughout the property, music and fireside sound add atmosphere, and The Lantern takes on an entirely different character after sunset.
